The Old Soldiers' Home

Recreated from and perpetuating the original 'oldsoldiershome.com'
website of Col. Thomas W. Cohoon (Ret.) *, R.I.P.
It is now revived and being extended by his friends and comrades.

Tom's original domain name - oldsoldiershome.com - has recently been re-acquired from an internet pirate who was holding it for ransom. On 20 July 2010, the fourth anniversary of Tom's death, we are pleased to relaunch his vision. Extensions to that work which have been made in the interventing years will continue to be found at oldsoho.com/index.html

OLD SOLDIERS NEVER DIE, THEY JUST FADE AWAY TO THE OLD SOLDIERS' HOME TO SHARE MEMORIES OF THEIR ROLE IN RESHAPING THE WORLD.

OF TRUST AND BETFOR, PRESIDENT TRUMAN (1946): "THEY'RE THE BEST."

WINSTON CHURCHILL (1946): "THE FUTURE OF ITALY HANGS IN THE BALANCE."

SOUTHERN TIP OF THE IRON CURTAIN

Everyone thought World War II was over, but they watched nervously as Stalin's Communist tentacles spread through the Balkan Nations into Yugoslavia and paused on the Italian border. Marshall Tito announced his claim to the Pola Penisula and his intent to march through Trieste to get there. Tensions heightened, American planes were shot down and Lt. Van Atten and a small patrol of horse mounted Infantrymen were captured and taken deep into Yugoslavia. There was sporadic gunfire along the Morgan Line, a disputed boundary created by UK General Morgan. Only one obstacle stood in the way of the Communist advance: The men of TRUST and BETFOR. Though tremendously outnumbered, these handpicked, seasoned troops stood their ground and Tito had second thoughts. "They are the best!" said U.S. President Harry Truman and the rest of the free world agreed.

ORGANIZATION

While this Web Site was established by the men of the 88th Inf. Div., Trieste United States Troops (TRUST), and British Element Trieste Force (BETFOR) who stood shoulder to shoulder against another aggressor in another time and place, all Old Soldiers are welcome here to share memories or to look up an old comrade. Please post a message to our Guestbook and join us.

COMMENDATION
To the TRUST troops. My congratulations to those behind this web site. One of the great abilities of the Internet is to provide a cyberspace gathering place for old friends. Many times, as is evident on this site, those 'friends' were never personal friends. Rather they are men and women sharing a common experience. Isn't it ironic that within your lifetimes history again repeats itself as we find 'peacekeepers' in the Baltic States. On behalf of the nearly 3 million men and women I am proud to represent, "Thank You" for your service, sacrifice and leadership.

INFORMATION ABOUT THIS SITE
The Old Soldiers' Home continues to be one of the largest Web Sites on the internet. It consists of 107 pages dedicated to the memory of a group of young men who, for nine years, were entrusted in the world. Music of the era plays in the background as you wander through its nostalgia- packed pages filled with more than 140 photographs depicting life as it was in the Free Territory of Trieste. The word Free was provided by the men of Trieste United States Troops and the British Element Trieste Force. To the people of Trieste we say: "You're welcome. It was indeed a pleasure serving you!"

WARNING! THIS IS AN ALL-WEATHER SITE!

We support our Nation, our Commander-in-Chief, our Armed Forces and any and all wars in which they might become engaged, against any foe, at any time and at any place in the world, 100% of the time. In short, we are full-time Americans. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will not find a friendly environment here. Love it or leave it!
